WINCHELSEA BEACH
The two Winchelseas – Winchelsea and Winchelsea Beach – are a mile apart in distance and much further apart in ambience. Much of Winchelsea Beach village is hidden behind Sea Road – lanes and footpaths leading off the road run down to a long sweep of shingle, divided by low wooden groynes, and with far-reaching views around Rye Bay. Sand is revealed at low tide, and a sea wall runs along the beach. You can walk or cycle east towards Rye Harbour, past the nature reserve and the thought-provoking Mary Stanford Lifeboat House memorial, or west to Pett Level, where as well as the shingle beach there are some swanky houses to admire. The cliffs to the west mark Fairlight and the start of the Hastings Country Park. There are a handful of shops in Winchelsea Beach, but of most interest to visitors is The Ship, which houses a restaurant/bar with plenty of garden seating and a deli with a great butcher’s counter.
Up on the hill, Winchelsea is impossibly cute. A medieval grid system is lined with picture-perfect houses from several eras, and there’s an impressive church and the ruins of an ancient town wall. It used to be an important place, a Cinque Port and a centre for wine trading (there are close to 50 ancient cellars in the town), but as the River Brede dwindled, so did Winchelsea. Its raised position means glorious views in all directions; stand at The Lookout near Strand Gate for views of the sea, Camber Castle and the Royal Military Canal (which terminates just beyond here at Cliff End). An upmarket village store, Winchelsea Farm Kitchen, can provide hot drinks; there’s also a pub, the New Inn, and an interesting shop, Black Cat Gallery (art and collectables). A bus links the two villages.
